Harvey Nichols- We’ll miss you sweetie!
We get it- shops close down or ‘change direction’ And yes, we stocked our marshmallows with them so it’s a blow for our business but the news that Harvey Nichols is closing all its food halls came as a real shock. For those of us who came of age in the glossy whirl of the 90s (ahem) Harvey Nicks wasn’t just a shop. It was the shop. When we were growing up the news that Leeds was getting a Harvey Nicks was a BIG DEAL. We’d made it.
The Marshmallowist started on a small stall on London’s Portobello Market- selling homemade marshmallows in flavours inspired by other market traders and the surrounding cocktail bars ( Blueberry & Gin marshmallow anyone?) And it was there that the buyer from Harvey Nichols discovered us and gave us a spot on the bakery counter of their Knightsbridge store- it felt like a velvet rope had been lifted. We were in. It was Harvey Nichols who helped us become a gourmet brand. Luxury suddenly had a place for marshmallows! ( here's some grainy shots of our first ever sampling in their food hall 13 years ago!)
And we loved hanging our there- memories of fun Taste On Two demo events in Manchester where the staff were all just the BEST.
to saturday samplings in our home Leeds Food Hall (15 mins away from our bakery) We'd often just nip in just to see our boxes on the shelves.
And don’t even get us started on their gorgeous packaging. Harvey Nichols' own-brand range was a masterclass in cool- those graphic shapes and colour pops still sit on our Pinterest board. It taught us that food could be fashion. That your marshmallow box could be just as beautiful as the thing inside it.
For us, this isn’t just a retail restructuring. It’s the curtain call on a cultural icon that made space for young British food brands. We’re grateful. We’re nostalgic. And we’re proud to have been a part of it.
Ta very much Harvey Nichols, we’ll miss you sweetie!
