When The Times Came to Tea

Yep. The Times. Like, the actual newspaper. We scrubbed the bakery, popped the kettle on and even put on matching socks. And then a very lovely journalist and a photographer turned up to talk marshmallows, magic, and why we ditched the capital for the sweet embrace of Yorkshire. Why? Because we’ve been featured as one of their “Regional Rising Stars” a spotlight series on brilliant businesses blooming outside London

Turns out, London can  a tricky place to grow a marshmallow empire. When a buyer from Harvey Nichols spotted us at Portobello Market and asked her to stock their store, things got serious. That’s when The Marshmallowist was officially born- back in 2011, with a whisk, a wild idea, and a LOT of melted sugar.

Fast-forward a few years, a move back home to Leeds- a big ‘hiya’ to more affordable rents and family support network, and The Marshmallowist is now whipping up marshmallows and teacakes in our Farsley mill with our wonderful team.

The Times came to capture the chaos and charm. We chatted about how it all started- Oonagh’s  teen obsession with Hotel Chocolat’s subscription boxes, to moving to Paris to learn the language and the art of chocolate-making (not your average post-A-level gap year). And somewhere along the way, Vogue came calling, Penguin Random House asked for a recipe book, and our little kitchen got a lot busier.

We’ve always self-funded and we’ve always done things our way. More flavour freedom. Less investor emails. Leeds has been very sweet to us - and our lovely London based buyers even brave the LNER route for their regular tastings!

It’s honestly a huge honour to be part of this lineup—and a real joy to share what we do with a national audience. We didn’t even bribe them with mallows (Much.)

And if you’re in the mood for a teacake now, we got you...
